How overseas teachers gain the right to work in the UK

At Teach London, we work closely with overseas teachers who are passionate about bringing their skills and expertise to UK schools. One of the key aspects of this process is ensuring that our teachers have the right to work in the UK. Many overseas teachers come to the UK with different types of visas, depending on their circumstances, and some will be able to gain a British passport.

Youth Mobility Visa

The Youth Mobility Visa is one of the most common routes for teachers coming from certain countries. This visa allows young people to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years, with the possibility of extending it for a further year. The maximum age for this is 35.

Ancestry Visa

Another popular option for overseas teachers is the Ancestry Visa. This visa is issued by the UK to Commonwealth citizens with a grandparent born in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Ireland who wish to work in the United Kingdom. This allows these individuals to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years. The best part about this visa is that there is no maximum age limit, making it accessible to a wide range of experienced teachers.

Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker Visa allows a teacher to come to the UK to take up a position with an approved employer, such as a school or Trust. The visa is typically granted for up to 5 years and there is no maximum age limit. However, in order for a school or Trust to sponsor a teacher on this visa, the school must have a sponsorship licence.

British passport

Some overseas teachers may also be able to gain a British passport, especially if they are from a Commonwealth country or have parents who are British citizens. This can make the process of working in the UK a lot easier, and it allows teachers to bypass the need for a visa entirely.
